The IC697MEM717 is a dedicated memory expansion module designed for GE 771 and 772 CPUs in GE programmable logic controller (PLC) systems. Its primary function is to extend the capacity of the battery-backed PCM (Programmable Coprocessor Module) memory integrated in the host CPU or standalone PCM. Notably, the module requires no additional configurable slots for data and program storage deployment.

Available in four capacity variants—64 KB, 128 KB, 256 KB, and 512 KB—the IC697MEM717 is installed as a daughterboard, sharing the same chassis slot as the target module it supports. The memory resources provided by this module serve as a supplementary extension to the baseboard’s native memory capacity. Power loss protection for stored data is enabled by the battery housed in the baseboard, which ensures continuous memory retention during system power outages.

A key reliability feature of the IC697MEM717 is its built-in error-checking mechanism: the PLC CPU executes continuous background error verification on the module’s logic program memory. For PCM storage memory, error checking persists consistently across power cycles, as well as during hard and soft system resets.

Specific installation procedures must be followed based on the target application scenario:

For CPU-based installations, technicians are required to clear existing memory contents using either Windows-based programming software or MS-DOS-compatible utility software prior to module deployment.
For PCM-based installations, all operational guidelines and instructions included with the programmable coprocessor module must be strictly adhered to.

The IC697MEM717 boasts a 10-year shelf life when stored at an optimal ambient temperature of 20°C (68°F).
